Research Center for Future Information Technology (FIT) is the incubator for emerging key information research projects, leveraging on RIIT's multidispline effort. Formally as SIST's inter-displine research lab (Center for Multimedia and Cooperative) funded by Prof. LI Yanda, FIT serves the objectives of promoting new directions of academic research and technical innovation.
FIT manages RIIT's annual research grant. It selects and organizes innovative multidispline projects among faculties of SIST's academic departments, and provide fund to support the awarded projects. Normally there will be 1 to 3 new projects selected. Awarded projects are evaluated each year and funding to each project can be renewed for only once (maximum 2 years funding per project). Call for project will be published each year. Deadline for proposal submission is last day of each spring semester. Evaluation will be conducted during summer, and awarded projects are announced first week of each fall semester.
In 2003, FIT funded ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems), home networking, and digital multimedia. Among them, Tsinghua University ITS Research Center was established based on the ITS projects, and the home networking project grew into Tsinghua-Guoguang Digital Media Research Institute.
FIT's 2004 awarded projects are automotive electronics, network security, and e-government projects
Currently, FIT has two labs: Broadband Networked Digital Multimedia and Network Security.
