Co-founded by the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Microelectronics of Tsinghua University, the Microprocessor and SoC (System on Chip) Technology R&D Center focuses on research and development of advanced, high-performance microprocessors and SoC applications in various systems.
Mission: Heading into the 21st century, we setup the center to improve the research and development strength of Tsinghua University in the IC industry, to promote international exchange and collaboration, to cultivate people with creativity and build up experienced and innovative design team. The center will also bring into play the interdisciplinary strength of Tsinghua University in computer science and micro-electronics, conducting R&D in high performance processors and SoC applications with independent property right, industrialization perspective and in turn raising new topics and new research areas.
Organization: The research and development of microprocessor involves multiple fields in computer science and VLSI technology, including computer architecture, software/hardware co-design, IC CAD, operating system, compiler, etc. Accordingly, the center consists of 5 groups: computer architecture, ASIC design, physical design, test and verification, software and application. The center's areas of research cover IC design (standard-cell based as well as fully customized flows), software/hardware co-design and verification, system software and development tools, performance evaluation, and low power technology, etc.
Research: The center takes great advantage of Tsinghua University's leading position in computer science, micro-electronics and many related fields, continuing making progress and contributing to these fields. Advocating innovation and practicability, the center currently undertakes many government-funded projects, most of which are "National 863 High-Tech. Programs", "National 985 Programs", "National 211 Programs", and "National Science Foundation" sponsored projects. The center cooperates closely with many world-class universities, research institutes, as well as many cutting-edge IC design and EDA companies.
The center's goal is to become a first-class R&D base of microprocessors, SoC chips and application systems. Not only will the center produce top-class IC chips and systems, but also it will produce well-trained and excellent researchers and designers.
