Wireless and Mobile Communication Technology R&D Center

Mission: To meet the growing demand for communication between individuals any where at any time with any media through wireless communication technologies, Wireless and Mobile Communication Technology R&D Center will carry out key technologies and core systems. This will greatly improve the convenience of personal communication and contribute to the growth of the emerging information industry, in areas such as the third generation mobile communication systems (3G or IMT-2000), wireless local area networks (WLAN), and ultra wide band (UWB) technology.

The center makes full use of the superiorities in the integrated academic subjects in the School of Information Science and Technology, which include many areas of research such as communication technology, the radio frequency technology, the micro-electronics technology, the software technology, the micro-package technology. The center's goal is to strengthen core competency in intellectual property and economy growth potential at national level through technology innovation and industrialization.

Organization: The center has 2 research groups: Wireless Access System Group and Mobile Communication System Group. It creates a creative atmosphere and teamwork environment and provides the infrastructure for continuous research and development in wireless and mobile communication for Tsinghua University.

Research: The center has been conducting the development of IMT-2000 systems and wideband wireless access systems. The special emphasis has been focused on the advanced core technology development and implementation such as coherent demodulation, channel coding and decoding, and software defined radio (SDR). The center's research effort has been concentrating on the development of multi-mode terminals (GSM/GPRS/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/WLAN) for mobile communication systems and the development of WLAN systems with high performance in security, QoS, smooth roaming, and networking.

The center adopts new techniques to enhance the performance of wireless and mobile communication systems, which include the MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuits), SOC (system on chip), SIP (system in package), LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic), and the SDR (software defined radio).
